Boat Improvements for the Practical Sailor

There is nothing unique about the television cable connector; simply screw the coax cable collar onto the male coax post.

Installing the Inlet

The final installation of the inlet itself is straightforward (Fig. 6). Place a small amount of sealant on the gasket between the gasket and the inlet housing. Press the two together, and remove most of the excess sealant.

Now place a small amount of sealant on the other side of the gasket; insert a screw into any one of the holes in the corners of the housing, and press the complete assembly into place on the boat. Hold the inlet in place while only hand-tightening this fastener. Insert the other three screws and hand-tighten them also, prior to using a screwdriver. Once all four screws are in place, tighten them with a screwdriver and remove any excess sealant. Note: Silicone could be used as the sealant, but since this is a permanent installation, you would be better advised to use an "adhesive sealant" such as 3M5200 or Boat-Life's Life-Seal.

The final step is to install a strain relief cable holder (Fig. 7) near the inlet on the interior side. This will help assure that the wiring connections will remain in place on the inlet when tension is placed on the wiring while pulling it through the boat.

The cable run through the boat will be dependent upon your particular vessel and the location of your television and phone outlet. It should be a route that is as direct as possible, hidden wherever you are able to hide it, and without interfering with storage areas in lazarettes and lockers. Be certain that both types of wire are run together as if they were one, by using two or three nylon tie wraps at the lead end of the wires to hold the two securely together.

After the cable/wire run has been completed, the coax cable can be connected to the television either directly on an RG-59 post or by means of an adapter that will then attach to two screw terminals. Check the reverse side of your TV for specifics.
